Now that smartphones have become a regular feature of day-to-day life, important information can be easier to keep up with. Phones are used to keep pictures, contact information, documents, and even business software. When it comes time to buy a new phone, transferring all that saved information can seem daunting.
It used to be much more difficult to transfer data from an Android to an iPhone, but the steps have become considerably easier as technology progresses. The following can help you navigate transferring data from an iOS or Android to your new iPhone.
How to transfer from iPhone to iPhone
Apple has devised an easy and painless process for transferring data from an older device to a new one. The following instructions are identical regardless of whether you are using a Mac or Windows PC.
The first step is to create a backup of your device through iTunes. Use a USB cord to plug your old iPhone into your computer. When you open iTunes, in the top left corner of the window you will find the device icon. Click on this icon and choose the device you will be transferring data from.
A summary page will appear after this step. Click “Backup” and follow the prompts provided. If you are asked if you want to back up your apps or transfer purchases over, it is a good idea to do both. To ensure you have enough space to perform the backup, click on Apple>About This Mac>Storage on the top of the screen. This will tell you the size of your device and the amount of free space available to you. To determine how much space you need, subtract the free space total from the capacity.
Even if you lost your old phone, there may be hope in backing up some of the information that it held. You can find out if you have old backups in iTunes by going to Preferences>Devices. The old backups you might have will be listed next to the date the backup was made.
After the backup is complete, connect your new iPhone to your computer. When you launch iTunes this time, a welcome greeting should pop up with an invitation to get started on your new device. Follow the prompts and click on “Restore Backup.” At this point, you will be given a list of backups you previously performed and when they occurred. Choose the most recent and then hit “Restore” and wait for the process to complete.
When the backup has been fully restored, your new iPhone should look and feel as familiar as your old one. However, it is possible some things may be out of place. There could be some apps you still need to download and you will likely have to re-enter login information for most of your accounts.
How to transfer from Android to iPhone
Apple has now created an app to automate the data transfer process from an Android to an iPhone, so it is easier than it has ever been. In the Google Play store, download the “Move to iOS” app to your Android device. This app will allow you to transfer all of your saved data wirelessly. It may take a while to transfer the data, so make sure you have both phones plugged into a power source during the transfer.
The “Move to iOS” app will work on all phones or tablets that are running Android 4.0 and later. After it is installed, launch the app to begin the transfer process. Follow the setup procedure on your new iPhone until you reach the “Apps and Data” screen. Click on “Move Data from Android” and then click “Continue.” You should see a 10-digit numerical code, which you will then enter into your old Android device and click “Continue.” This will prompt the iPhone to create a private wireless network known as an ad-hoc network. Your Android phone will connect to the network so that it can copy the data.
When both of your phones are connected, you will be prompted to select which data you want to transfer over. When you’ve made your selection, hit “Next” so the transfer can begin. When the process is complete, you can continue with the setup process on your iOS device.
Again, this is where you will be asked to enter password information, including your Apple ID. However, all of your messages, contacts, and photos should be sorted in the correct places. The only downside is that your applications cannot be copied over from Android to iPhone. You’ll have to redownload the ones you need or find alternatives that work with your new operating system.
Consider cloud storage
The cloud is a great way to back up all of your information whether you are using Android or iPhone. It also makes transferring everything much easier if you save as you go along. This will ensure that your data is always saved in preparation for a new phone, or in the case that your phone breaks.
