Smartphones are an indispensable part of everyday life. These devices keep us connected both socially and professionally with a wide variety of options to fine tune our lives. Despite that, very few know just how much their smartphone is actually capable of doing. If you are an Android user, there are eight things in particular that you might have missed.
The easiest way to save your battery power
Adding a little battery life to your phone can be stunningly simple. Choose a simple dark or all black background for your screen. This change causes the automatic pixel highlighting to turn off, which conserves battery power. There are a few Android devices this feature isn’t available for yet, but it is already implemented on the majority of Samsung smartphones and tablets.
Did you know you could be listening to this article right now instead of reading it? Turn on the “text-to-speech” option on your Android device by going to Settings, then Accessibility. This turns your smartphone or tablet into a narrator, so you can receive information while multi-tasking.
Smartphone remote control
The idea of losing your smartphone along with all the precious information it contains can terrify anyone. However, there is now a setting that will allow you to remotely locate a lost Android device and lock it from wherever you are. You can even completely erase your phone data remotely if you are unable find it, so that your information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Simply go to Settings, then Security, then Device Administrators. Check the boxes next to Android Device Manager entitled “remotely locate this device” and “allow remote lock and erase.”
There is perhaps nothing more embarrassing than letting your friend borrow your smartphone only to have them stumble onto something private. If you need to temporarily loan your phone to someone else, there is now a way to keep your personal data to yourself. Swipe down from the top of your Android device and click the user icon in the upper right corner. You should see an “Add Guest” icon appear. With this feature, you will be able to choose what the borrower can do with your Android phone and, more importantly, what they can’t do.
The screen magnifier can be essential to someone with poor eyesight. This Android feature allows you to zoom in on any part of the display simply by tapping it. Go to Settings, then Accessibility, and click on Magnification Gestures to turn on this feature.
You no longer need to go searching for free wi-fi with this handy feature. You don’t even need to buy a separate 3G modem or router. Some Android devices come with a built-in hotspot for all of your connection needs. Simply go to Settings, then Tethering and Portable Hotspot and turn on “Portable WLAN hotspot.”
Control your Android device by moving your head
This function takes “hands free” to a whole new level. Maybe you have your hands full or it’s freezing outside and you don’t want to take your gloves off. If you have an Android device, these issues are no problem. Head to the Play Store and download a free app called “EVA Facial Mouse,” so you can control your Android device with head movements.
Since Android 2.3 Gingerbread came out, Google has been hiding a secret present for its users to find in all of their Android devices. It can be a little difficult to find, but here’s what you need to do. Go to Settings and click on About Device. Locate the words “Android Version” and tap on them several times. Depending on the version of your smartphone, you will see a graphic of some kind appear. For some, it is a marshmallow, while others see the letter N. Just tap on the graphic several times and a special mini-game will open.
